Elmont Dads’ Service Club hosts annual food drive

November 27, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Gotham Avenue School’s gymnasium was filled with turkeys and all the fixings for many Thanksgiving meals on Nov. 18, as the community came together to box up the food collected by students and faculty throughout the Elmont School District. They prepared it for distribution to deserving families in the community.

District bus drivers, administrators, teachers and students, along with local Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and a local soccer club organized the food to ensure that each box contained a full meal. Board of Education President Michael A. Jaime and trustee Michael Cantara joined Superintendent of Schools Al Harper as the large group worked.

“On behalf of the Elmont School District and the Dads’ Club, I want to thank all of you for your support. The number of people that show up to help gets bigger and bigger every year and I really appreciate it,” Mr. Harper said.

Among the helpers was Gotham Avenue third-grade teacher Kim McManus and her daughter’s soccer team, the Rockville Centre soccer U12 team Velocity. Also lending a hand were members of Elmont Memorial High School’s Key Club. In all, the food drive supplied 56 local families with meals this holiday season.

“Students learn the lifelong benefits of cardiovascular exercise and how it leads to a healthy heart,” said Donna Greco, a physical education teacher.

Project coordinators George Bossert, Donna Greco and Carrie Perkins would like to thank the students and community for their tremendous support.

Top fundraisers were Hannah Broxmeyer, Casey Cascio, Lauren Duany, Max Hahn, Jonathan Kokura, Jared Levine, Massimo Marino, Ted Piccininni, Ian Peckman, Riley Peckman, Lena Roseman, Nick Salas and Skylar Ward.

FIELD HOCKEY PROGRAM BAKES, DONATES PIES FOR SPRINGFIELD (MASS.) RESCUE MISSION

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Members of the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team spent time earlier this week baking homemade pies and collecting additional pies that went to the Springfield (Mass.) Rescue Mission. The pies were distributed this week in conjunction with the Thanksgiving holiday.

This event is just one example of many community outreach events that SCSU student-athletes take part in on an annual basis. SCSU student-athletes volunteered more than 2,500 hours of their time to numerous outreach efforts, both on-campus and in Greater New Haven, during the 2016-17 academic year.

Packaging a Thanksgiving feast

November 22, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Students, administrators and faculty of the West Hempstead School District assisted the high school Key Club’s Thanksgiving food drive on Nov. 15 by packaging more than 50 boxes of canned goods and nonperishable items for local families to enjoy this holiday.

Since September, members of the Key Club have been encouraging students, faculty and residents to drop off donations during the school day, hosting a stuff-the-bus fundraiser at homecoming and asking shoppers for donations at local Stop and Shop grocery stores.

Key Club members, administrators, students and staff formed an assembly line in one of the school’s hallways to transport the donations from the pantry to the cafeteria. Volunteers sorted and organized the canned beans, soup, green beans, corn, rice, pasta, stuffing, cereal and juice into categorical sections on tables.

Afterward, volunteers across the district distributed the canned goods and nonperishables into 52 boxes filled with the essentials needed to complete a savory holiday dinner.

Adelphi & LIU Post Present Winthrop Hospital Department of Neuroscience Charity Game Proceeds

November 22, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Mineola, N.Y.- The Adelphi University baseball team competed in their annual charity game versus LIU Post on October 14, 2017 during the fall season to raise money for stroke awareness. The proceeds were given to Winthrop Hospital Department of Neuroscience Tuesday afternoon and presented to Neuroscience Chairman, Dr. Ajay Misra, Administrative, Director Gina Dutton, Director of Neurohospitalist and Stroke Services, Dr. Shazia Alam, along with other representatives from the department.

The annual charity game, played for stroke awareness this year, was dear to the hearts of both the Pioneers and the Panthers. The game was played in honor of Bill Gaffney, the father of the LIU Post head coach and Adelphi Hall of Famer (’98) and baseball alum. Gaffney received expert treatment from the hospital where they have helped him tremendously in his recovery the past several years.

The event raised over $1,000 dollars which was given directly to the Neuroscience Department at Winthrop Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

This year, both teams decided to split the earnings and give half to Winthrop Hospital, and the remaining half to the American Red Cross after the mass devastation in Puerto Rico in result of Hurricane Maria.
